Toy mashup: Darth Vader says … meow!

without comments

Not the most advanced mod but I liked how our “brave” cat reacted when I tested a meowing Darth Vader on him.

Conclusion: Darth Vader still has the power of the dark side! :)

Cat Communication

I later learned that only kittens meow. Adult cats only meow to communicate their needs to humans, they won’t meow when communicating with each other. Instead the rely on body language, purring and growling. So when your cat meows at you, it is basically playing kitten with you.

Toy Mashup

This is a first in a series of Mini-DIYs where I will try mashing up parts from different thrift store toys.

Step 4: Debug

It is important to have a little fun every day. I learned that from watching Star Trek. And it doesn’t take much effort to amuse me. 5 minutes with a pair of sissors and permanent marker, and VOILA! You have a new facial ornament!

Pappmaskin TV

I’ve been adding YouTube videos to my Favorites like crazy for quite some time, just for my own enjoyment, but I recently discovered that YouTube lets users create their own custom players and present them wherever they want. The feature was a little hidden away under “More …”, and lets you choose between two different layouts, the one chosen here being the slimmest, some predefined colour sets, and one of you playlists, all your favorites or your own videos.

I work for NRK, the Norwegian version of BBC, so I suggested to let some of our most profiled people present their favorites on our site. Everyone bookmarks YouTube anyway, so the response was great, so we’ll see what comes out of it.

Update: Weirdness, if I choose this player, and to display my favorites, only 10 clips appear, but If I choose one of my other playlists, all are available. Bug or feature?

How-To: Stream almost anything using VLC – Engadget – www.engadget.com

How-To: Stream almost anything using VLC – Engadget – www.engadget.com:

The VLC media player is an amazing piece of software. In its most basic form it is a lightweight media player that can play almost any audio or video format you throw at it. VLC is also multiplatform in the most extreme sense of the word; it can run on Windows, OSX, Linux and PocketPC / WinCE handhelds along with other systems. VLC works great as a streaming server and video transcoder too.

We used VLC to move Tivo recordings to an iPod before, but today we are going to show you how to stream any type of media file from your computer to another device on your network. We will also demonstrate how to remotely control VLC using any web browser. Using these techniques you could stream video from your office computer to a laptop plugged into the living room TV and control the playlist with your PDA.

Dircaster, and other Podcasting Software (Publishing)

without comments

I have made three podcasts, one for my employer, and the first mp3 feed in Norway, and two very silly ones that I haven’t updated since I made them. I have a ton of material, both sound and video, but I’m just to darn lazy, so I thought I would try out a few solutions to make publishing a tiny bit faster, the first one out is Dircaster. I’ll do an update to this post if I like it. Please drop a comment if you have tips of other tools.

Dircaster - drop this script in a directory and it will generate a podcast feed based off the MP3 files in that directory. To ‘cast a new file, simply upload it to the directory containing this script.Requires PHP4 or better.

Update, a tiny review: All right, the setup was super easy, found just on bug, the reference to the id3 folder was wrong out of the box, so if you want to keep the original folder structure you just have to change a ../ to ./ in dircaster.php. Silly thing. Alas the script doesn’t support æøå and other special characters, so if you add any “strange” characters in your id3 tags you can watch your hard labour being stripped away and mutilated, buhu!
You can see the result here. (not clickable on purpose, hello Google): http://poetikon.no/podcast/dircaster.php Put it into your aggregator and down load a little Norwegian poetry and a 6.5mb quicktime movie.

Actually, the howto included on adding more mimetypes seem to be a little off, you have to put a , between each mimetype, like so.

$sftypes=”(.mov,.mp3)”;

If you want to check out some other solutions for publishing your podcasts you could take a peek at podcastingnews.com:
