First impressions (Tempo Standard 1955)

tempo-standard-first-impressions

I recently became the proud owner of a rusty pile of motorcycle that I’m planning to restore. Here are the first pictures I took the night I got it (plus a few from the original ad).

This is a picture the seller sent me. What I love about this bike is it’s shape, and the fact that it is Norwegian.

As you can the the exhaust is sort of lying on the ground. Hm :)

Engine in a box
Engine in a box
The first pictures I took the night my "new" motorcycle arrived. Alot of things missing on this bike! For a motorcycle this must be the equivalent of open heart surgery, seeing your engine in a box like that.Check out the cool bag by the way, it contains some tools for the bike. Looking forward take a better peak.

Jum Jum red!I have an image in my mind of what I want this bike to look like, but I am uncertain about what to do with the color. I would love to paint it black, and to re-chrome as much as possible, but it would also be nice to keep the original colours.Oh well, I have time to figure that out, first I must find out what condition the engine is in!

Rusty gas tank
Rusty gas tank
Rusty to say the least. I wonder how I can get this sucker to shine again! The original Tempo Standard tank has two color. On this one monocromatic red and chrome.

Speedometer and headlight
Speedometer and headlight
I love this design! The ignition key goes into the top of the headlight. Twist it one way to turn on the main light (which runs off the engine). Turn it the other way to turn on the parking light, which runs off the battery. The ignition key is missing, and so is the wire that goes from the speedometer to the engine. I believe money shall be spent…

Missing headlight glass
Missing headlight glass
The glass is missing, and the reflector needs love. I also need to replace the fuse and the lightbulb of course. And perhaps some of the wireing.

Front wheel and break looks pretty good, but what do I know. Actually, the rubber on the wheel is cracked, it must be replaced. The rims also must be cleaned on the inside, and … something … to stop rust.

Throttle needs some work
Throttle needs some work
Someone has driven the shit out of this throttle. Eighter that, or is has been eaten by mice or something. The brake needs a new wire or at least a new "hose" or whatever it is called.

Left handle missing rubber
Left handle missing rubber
No rubber here eighter, and the clutch handle + wire is missing. So is the mirror.Update: I’ve ordered a new clutch-handle pluss wire. My first purchase.

Inside gas tank
Inside gas tank
Taking a peak in the gas tank. No surprises there: Rust! But nothing too bad.I’ve gotten a few tips on how to treat the inside of the tank…

Gas tank lid
Gas tank lid
The cap for the gas tanks screws on smooth as butter. I thought the cap was missing, because I couldn’t see it on the pictures the seller sent me, but here it is! Probably saved me a fortune. Which is good, because fixing all the other things will eat a lot of cash!

Magic secret rusty compartment!

For treasure maps.

Nutcracker Seat!
Nutcracker Seat!
Yes, pun intended. :) It’s possibly rideable, but I hope I can find a replacement. Notice the springs underneath, cool detail, if I can bring back the shine to them.

I think the frame looks quite good actually! Good!

Rear wheel
Rear wheel
Talk about rusty sprocket. The chain is missing, along with the chain cover.

Footrest and stand
Footrest and stand
One of the feet for the stand is broken off cleanly. Might have to fabricate that one, weld something on there perhaps. Jikes. Or by new one.is it called a stand? I have no idea what it’s called in English…

Broken taillight
Broken taillight
This taillight sure has seen better days! From what I’ve read it will be hard to find a new one.

Broken Tail light
Broken Tail light
I wonder what happened to this tail light, it looks like someone kicked it or something. The fenders and frame looks really good on this bike, not too much rust. Looking forward to taking them off and cleaning them. Perhaps a little polish will bring back more of the original color. The thing on the bottom of the picture is the licence plate holder.

Rear wheel
Rear wheel
This looks pretty good, besides the flat tire. I will need to take this apart to check the rear brakes. The spokes and rims could use a lot of love, I would preffer if I could sand blast and re-chrome them.

This makes me nervous. On the pictures from the seller the engine was on the bike, but when I got it it looked like this. Taking apart the engine will be the first order of business, and I am kind of nervous about what it will look like.I know NOTHING about motorcycle engines (yet), so this will be a learning experience. Luckily I have a neighbour with LOTS of hands on experience, so hopefully I won’t screw anything up too bad :)
